Rieko Kenya has a strong belief that the voice of the powerless can
be raised through comprehensive education system that includes formal, non-formal and informal. A number of existing school facilities in rural communities are still in a pathetic situation and are almost becoming inhabitable by children.

Free primary and subsidized high school education in Kenya has contributed to equipping schools with relevant instructional materials and school maintenance. On the other hand, it has increased enrolment leading to serious overcrowding forcing children in some schools to learn under harsh weather conditions. Rieko Kenya is committed to supporting school infrastructural establishment and education of orphans and vulnerable children.

Rieko Kenya is forming and strengthening school based clubs that provides education on health, Environment and governance.

Teaching Projects
Rieko Kenya and Queen’s Health Outreach (QHO) began their partnership in the spring of 2012 initiating teaching projects in the Nyanza province. Together they worked to build sustainable partnerships with like-minded Community-Based Organizations (CBO), Community Health Workers (CHW) and local primary and secondary schools. Over the seven-week teaching project (May-June of 2012) QHO and Rieko Kenya taught about HIV/AIDS awareness, mental and physical health as well as leadership.

QHO and Rieko Kenya taught in seven primary schools and four secondary schools in addition to meeting with several CBOs. Through interactive lesson plans QHO and Rieko Kenya were able to engage community members in the material being taught, and saw a significant improvement in the understanding of prevalent health issues. Students continued to ask incredibly thoughtful and intelligent questions regarding the transmission of HIV/AIDS and ways to reduce stigma within their community.

Rieko Kenya in partnership with Queens Health Outreach (QHO) organized an HIV/AIDS open day at Mikei primary school, Nyatike district in Migori County. The story featured in one of the national newspapers "the star" on the 18th, June, 2012.

The occasion attracted over 2000 people from both Migori and Nyatike district. Eleven schools, 15 community groups and other stakeholders also attended. Voluntary counseling and testing of the pupils, students and the community members was one of the key activities. Over 300 people were tested and counseled on HIV/AIDS. For more information on the events of this amazing day, you can check the news online at www.the-star.co.ke.
The partnership between Rieko Kenya and QHO continues to remain strong as they work closely to prepare for their second teaching project this spring. The two teams plan to implement teaching projects in the Migori and Nyatike Districts again next year.

Due to the success of the HIV/AIDS community outreach day this past year, QHO and Rieko Kenya hope to organize a similar event this spring.

Working in such a supportive partnership is an unbelievable experience that leaves all members feeling empowered and inspired to make a difference. It is often said that you need to be the change you want to see in the world, and together QHO and Rieko Kenya fully embody this motto. The time for action is now. Join QHO and Rieko Kenya to put an end to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
